DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to welcome Megson to Harwell Village Hall. \nFour times nominated in the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards and double winners of the Spiral Earth Awards MEGSON create a truly unique brand of folk music. \nCombining an infectious mix of heavenly vocals\, lush harmonies and driving rhythmic guitars\, MEGSON have gained a reputation not only for their arresting & intelligent songwriting\, but also for their exquisite musicianship and northern humour. Comprising Debs Hanna (Vocals\, Whistle\, Piano Accordion) and Stu Hanna (Guitar\, Mandola\, Banjo) MEGSON have been described as as “the most original duo on the British folk scene” by THE GUARDIAN and as FROOTS Magazine puts it ‘if you don’t like the music here then you have a problem’. \nLiking to keep busy\, MEGSON have recorded thirteen studio albums across their twenty year career gaining four & five star reviews from THE GUARDIAN\, MOJO\, THE TELEGRAPH\, UNCUT\, THE FINANCIAL TIMES whilst THE OBSERVER pronounced them ‘A force in the folk revival’. Even lockdown 2020 couldn’t hold them back as they performed a hugely popular series of live stream concerts to their growing army of followers. \nAnd during all this time\, Stu even managed to be involved with other artists producing & recording award winning music for SHOW OF HANDS\, ODETTE MITCHEL\, LUCY WARD\, FAUSTUS & THE YOUNG’UNS. \nNow they are back doing what they do best\, on the road promoting a brand new studio album WHAT ARE WE TRYING TO SAY. Catch them if you can… \nSupport from Harwell favourite Anna Renae. \nTickets: https://wegottickets.com/event/637531 \nDoors and bar at 7pm\, music at 7:40pm.

SUMMARY:Didcot Phoenix Drama Group presents their Festival Showcase!
DESCRIPTION:Didcot Phooenix Drama Group are pleased to present a Showcase evening of two award winning one-act plays\, on Friday 12th September at 7.30pm in Harwell Village Hall.  Reviving two pieces from this year’s Oxfordshire theatre festival season\, we bring you Visitors by Emma Gardner and Calling All the Dreamers by Adelina Inganno. \n‘Visitors’ is a situation comedy set at Little Denys Castle\, England’s most boring ancient monument\, where the staff are facing an unexpected new phenomenon: visitors.  Site manager Freya\, pedantic volunteer Joan\, and work experience student Sally must overcome fudge shrapnel\, new-age gardeners and flying tomatoes to convince the tourists that Little Denys is worth visiting.  Above all\, they must stop their unexpected visitors escaping to Beaumaven – the grand castle next door\, whose site manager\, Shirley\, would very much like her visitors back. \n‘Calling All the Dreamers’ is inspired by the works of Dario Fo.  This is a world where Artificial Intelligence has seeped into every corner of daily life.  It is a fast-paced\, absurdist farce that follows the working class as they struggle to navigate an increasingly AI driven society that leaves people like them behind.  Brimming with black humour\, social commentary and biting satire\, Calling All the Dreamers is a wake-up call and a warning about the promises and risks new technology brings. \nTickets are £10 and £7 available in advance from www.ticketsource.co.uk/didcot-phoenix-drama-group or on the door. \n

SUMMARY:SOLD OUT - Big Ginger Tom Music Presents Tony Christie & Ranagri - The Great Irish Songbook Vol II Tour
DESCRIPTION:There are some\, albeit ‘misguided’ souls\, that think Tony Christie appeared out of nowhere in 2005\, to grace our TV screens and ask the way to Amarillo.  Nothing could be further from the truth. Those who know better\, who appreciate his wonderful voice and his ability to get inside a song\, can tell you that over the last 50 years he has recorded a string of exceptional records. \nSo: Is This the Way to Amarillo? No! \nFifty four years after the release of his million-selling hit\, Tony Christie takes a nostalgic journey through his family’s Irish roots\, revisiting the music of his grandparents who played in ceilidh bands and sang the songs of their homeland in County Mayo\, Ireland. \nOnce again joining forces with award-winning folk band Ranagri\, they wind their way through the music of their childhoods\, the stories that crafted the musicians they are today\, and the inspirations that have brought them all together. \nEntering his 83rd year\, this collaboration brings to light aspects of Tony Christie which many won’t have ever expected: emotional and introspective. With exquisite arrangements from Ranagri – guitars\, percussion\, flutes\, dulcimer\, harps – amidst haunting melodies and lush harmonies\, many of the old traditional songs shine with new brilliance. \nMelded with musical influences from all over the world\, their new album ‘The Great Irish Songbook Volume II’ will be released on the later this year. Expect to sing out loud\, laugh and cry! Join these exclusive performances for an uplifting evening to remember for many years to come. \nRanagri have performed in Canada\, Portugal\, Ibiza\, Italy\, Germany\, France and all across Ireland and will be touring throughout the UK this coming Autumn. \n‘Stunningly executed’ FATEA \n‘A match made in heaven’ The Irish Post \n**** Irish World \nRanagri – Band Of The Year 2022\, Fatea Magazine \nTony Christie – Lifetime Achievement Award 2024\, Fatea Magazine \nEliza Marshall – Instrumentalist Of The Year 2024\, Fatea Magazine \nTickets from biggingertommusic@gmail.com.

He made us a genre we couldn’t refuse” Bob Dylan \nAshley Hutchings ‘The Guvnor’ formed Fairport Convention in 1967\, a group that went on to invent British folk-rock with the album Liege & Lief – an album that was voted the ‘Most Important Folk Album of All Time’ by BBC Radio 2 listeners in 2002\, and at the 2006 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards it won the award for ‘Most influential Folk Album of all time’. He subsequently formed Steeleye Span who also had enormous success and then the first of many Albion Bands. \nBy 1977 the Albions became virtually the house band at the National Theatre with Ashley as Music Director. The band provided music and acted in many plays including the much-loved Lark Rise. In recent years “The Guvnor” has concentrated on songwriting\, spoken word and groundbreaking shows and albums and has released one hundred albums. \nAshley’s son Blair Dunlop joins his father for this very special tour. A BBC Folk Award-winning singer-songwriter in his own right\, the pair will reflect on a very special musical relationship in chat\, music and song. \nSupport will be from Bristol based Painted Sky.

SUMMARY:Big Ginger Tom Music Presents The Sam Kelly Trio with support from Sarah Yeo
DESCRIPTION:Sam Kelly will perform in Harwell for the first time in his trio format. \nSam writes and arranges most of his material with his main musical collaborator\, Jamie Francis. After meeting at university in Brighton in 2010 and discovering a common interest in roots music\, Sam and Jamie began playing together in a folk band\, with Jamie (a guitar player first and foremost) deciding to learn to play the banjo because Sam was already the guitarist. They also performed at many open mics and venues as a duo\, performing original\, folk and blues songs. \nNaturally\, the lives of two young musicians who have absolutely no idea what they´re doing became choc-full of many colourful experiences (including Sam auditioning for ITV´s Britain´s Got Talent whilst in London for a gig)\, and ending up getting all the way to the final). They still perform together at folk clubs\, venues and festivals\, performing inventive interpretations of tunes and songs in between (occasionally) funny anecdotes and stories of their misadventures. \nThe third member of the trio is fellow Lost Boy Graham Coe on cello. \nSupport is from Devon based Sarah Yeo. \nDoors and bar at 7pm\, music at 7:40pm. \nTickets £15 at https://wegottickets.com/event/636546 or from Duncan at the details below.

SUMMARY:Big Ginger Tom Music Presents Man The Lifeboats with support from Corrie Shelley
DESCRIPTION:Man The Lifeboats began life in a shanty-punk folk moshpit in 2016. Skinny Lister and Holy Moly & the Crackers were the two bands that lit the fire and blew the roof of the Garage that night.\n\nFast forward 6 years and 100 gigs and counting and Man The Lifeboats are an established band ploughing their furrow on the festival circuit\, winning over audiences at Warwick\, Swanage\, Beardy Folk\, Folk in a Field\, Bearded Theory\, Deepdale\, Ragged Bear and more\, drawing comparisons to Bellowhead\, Waterboys\, Oysterband\, the Levellers\, and those folk-punk heroes the Pogues.\n\nThe second album Soul Of Albion hit no27 in the Official Folk Charts in 2022. Recorded at Rockfield Studios\, it sounds like Led Zeppelin arm-wrestling Shane McGowan in a Birmingham brewery\, like Jimbob and Fruitbat fronting Fairport Convention\, like The Albion Band turned up to 11 with their fiddles on fire. Tonic for these troubled times.\n\nPRESS QUOTES\n\n“9/10.
