SUMMARY:Big Ginger Tom Music Presents Ninebarrow
DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to welcome Ninebarrow back to Harwell. \nNinebarrow (Jon Whitley and Jay LaBouchardiere) are a multi-award-winning folk duo\, who are impressing audiences across the country with their innovative and captivating take on the folk tradition. Described by Mark Radcliffe as sounding ‘like two halves of one voice’ and by Mercury Music Prize nominee Kate Rusby as ‘absolutely amazing’\, Jon and Jay combine breath taking vocal harmonies and melodies\, delivering original songs that are inspired and rooted in the landscape and history of the British Isles. As well as crafting unique and engaging original material\, Ninebarrow also take a wide-range of traditional folk songs and rework them in their own\, distinctive way. \nJon and Jay relinquished their respective full-time jobs as a teacher and GP back in 2016 and took a leap of faith into the music business – a gamble that almost immediately paid off. In 2017\, they were nominated for a BBC Radio 2 Folk Award: one of the highest accolades in the world of folk music and clear recognition for their outstanding harmonies\, high production values\, poetic lyricism and magical instrumentation. \nNamed after Nine Barrow Down in Dorset’s Purbeck hills\, the duo have produced four critically acclaimed albums with their 2021 record\, ‘A Pocket Full of Acorns’\, released to a raft of four and five star reviews in the folk and mainstream media. This arboreal-titled album brought with it a very special initiative which saw the pair planting 1\,000 native English trees (half of them oaks) and 200 shrubs to form The Ninebarrow Woodland on three acres of land near Gillingham in north Dorset – today the young woodland is burgeoning\, alive with myriad avian visitors and a flower glade. \nNever short of ideas\, the duo embraced the COVID lockdown period with a run of technically astute streamed gigs in indoor and outdoor settings (they continue today) which\, at their peak\, saw more than 2\,000 people tuning in as well as masterminding a special collaboration with two choirs (Hart Voices and Chantry Singers) to produce the charity single The Hour of the Blackbird which raised funds for mental health charity MIND. Keen walkers\, they have also penned two books of Dorset walks (with a third on the way) and for the past few years have run incredibly popular ‘musical walking holidays’ on Dorset’s magical Isle of Purbeck. \nAs they celebrate their first decade and prepare to release their fifth studio album\, it is clear that the name of Ninebarrow has become synonymous with one word – quality. The highly atmospheric ‘The Colour of Night’ (release date: 1st September 2023) is their first release in two-and-a-half years – and is a record that takes their remarkable success story to yet another level. \nSays Jon: “This collection is released in the tenth year since we picked up a ukulele and decided to have a go at singing some songs together. We feel like we’ve come a long way since then – we’re packing a few more instruments in the car for a start! The world has certainly felt a bit topsy-turvy since our last album but we are lucky to have received wonderful support that kept our spirits high – some of the songs here reflect that sentiment.” \nEngaging\, charismatic and humorous – Ninebarrow are winning new fans wherever they go. See them live\, and you’ll quickly understand why. \nThere is no support for this event – Ninebarrow will be on at 7:30pm \nDoors and bar 6:45pm\, music at 7:30pm

SUMMARY:Didcot Phoenix Drama Group presents their Festival Showcase!
DESCRIPTION:Didcot Phooenix Drama Group are pleased to present a Showcase evening of two award winning one-act plays\, on Friday 12th September at 7.30pm in Harwell Village Hall.  Reviving two pieces from this year’s Oxfordshire theatre festival season\, we bring you Visitors by Emma Gardner and Calling All the Dreamers by Adelina Inganno. \n‘Visitors’ is a situation comedy set at Little Denys Castle\, England’s most boring ancient monument\, where the staff are facing an unexpected new phenomenon: visitors.  Site manager Freya\, pedantic volunteer Joan\, and work experience student Sally must overcome fudge shrapnel\, new-age gardeners and flying tomatoes to convince the tourists that Little Denys is worth visiting.  Above all\, they must stop their unexpected visitors escaping to Beaumaven – the grand castle next door\, whose site manager\, Shirley\, would very much like her visitors back. \n‘Calling All the Dreamers’ is inspired by the works of Dario Fo.  This is a world where Artificial Intelligence has seeped into every corner of daily life.  It is a fast-paced\, absurdist farce that follows the working class as they struggle to navigate an increasingly AI driven society that leaves people like them behind.  Brimming with black humour\, social commentary and biting satire\, Calling All the Dreamers is a wake-up call and a warning about the promises and risks new technology brings. \nTickets are £10 and £7 available in advance from www.ticketsource.co.uk/didcot-phoenix-drama-group or on the door. \n

SUMMARY:SOLD OUT - Big Ginger Tom Music Presents Tony Christie & Ranagri - The Great Irish Songbook Vol II Tour
DESCRIPTION:There are some\, albeit ‘misguided’ souls\, that think Tony Christie appeared out of nowhere in 2005\, to grace our TV screens and ask the way to Amarillo.  Nothing could be further from the truth. Those who know better\, who appreciate his wonderful voice and his ability to get inside a song\, can tell you that over the last 50 years he has recorded a string of exceptional records. \nSo: Is This the Way to Amarillo? No! \nFifty four years after the release of his million-selling hit\, Tony Christie takes a nostalgic journey through his family’s Irish roots\, revisiting the music of his grandparents who played in ceilidh bands and sang the songs of their homeland in County Mayo\, Ireland. \nOnce again joining forces with award-winning folk band Ranagri\, they wind their way through the music of their childhoods\, the stories that crafted the musicians they are today\, and the inspirations that have brought them all together. \nEntering his 83rd year\, this collaboration brings to light aspects of Tony Christie which many won’t have ever expected: emotional and introspective. With exquisite arrangements from Ranagri – guitars\, percussion\, flutes\, dulcimer\, harps – amidst haunting melodies and lush harmonies\, many of the old traditional songs shine with new brilliance. \nMelded with musical influences from all over the world\, their new album ‘The Great Irish Songbook Volume II’ will be released on the later this year. Expect to sing out loud\, laugh and cry! Join these exclusive performances for an uplifting evening to remember for many years to come. \nRanagri have performed in Canada\, Portugal\, Ibiza\, Italy\, Germany\, France and all across Ireland and will be touring throughout the UK this coming Autumn. \n‘Stunningly executed’ FATEA \n‘A match made in heaven’ The Irish Post \n**** Irish World \nRanagri – Band Of The Year 2022\, Fatea Magazine \nTony Christie – Lifetime Achievement Award 2024\, Fatea Magazine \nEliza Marshall – Instrumentalist Of The Year 2024\, Fatea Magazine \nTickets from biggingertommusic@gmail.com.

SUMMARY:Big Ginger Tom Music Presents The Sam Kelly Trio with support from Sarah Yeo
DESCRIPTION:Sam Kelly will perform in Harwell for the first time in his trio format. \nSam writes and arranges most of his material with his main musical collaborator\, Jamie Francis. After meeting at university in Brighton in 2010 and discovering a common interest in roots music\, Sam and Jamie began playing together in a folk band\, with Jamie (a guitar player first and foremost) deciding to learn to play the banjo because Sam was already the guitarist. They also performed at many open mics and venues as a duo\, performing original\, folk and blues songs. \nNaturally\, the lives of two young musicians who have absolutely no idea what they´re doing became choc-full of many colourful experiences (including Sam auditioning for ITV´s Britain´s Got Talent whilst in London for a gig)\, and ending up getting all the way to the final). They still perform together at folk clubs\, venues and festivals\, performing inventive interpretations of tunes and songs in between (occasionally) funny anecdotes and stories of their misadventures. \nThe third member of the trio is fellow Lost Boy Graham Coe on cello. \nSupport is from Devon based Sarah Yeo. \nDoors and bar at 7pm\, music at 7:40pm. \nTickets £15 at https://wegottickets.com/event/636546 or from Duncan at the details below.
