SUMMARY:Big Ginger Tom Music presents Hannah Sanders & Ben Savage with support from Duotone
DESCRIPTION:Huddled round a single microphone\, singing intimate duets with just mountain dulcimer\, dobro and guitar\, Hannah Sanders & Ben Savage are an acoustic duo that sound classically timeless\, yet their music is unique. Since emerging in 2016\, the duo recorded two studio albums\, Before the Sun (2016) and Awake (2018)\, produced by award winning producer David Travers-Smith in Toronto. Both albums have gathered praise for the craft and skill of their musical writing and arranging. \nThey have shared stages and opened shows for Americana and folk luminaries such as Sarah Jarosz\, Martin Simpson\, Seth Lakeman and Oh Susanna. Fleetingly\, they may evoke a memory of Gram & Emmylou\, Shirley & Davey\, or Gillian & David but their distilling of musical influences from both sides of the Atlantic produces a refined sound that is decidedly their own. \nTheir unique unplugged presentation creates a widescreen\, cinematic soundscape with open spaces and atmosphere\, giving their beautifully pure vocals room to share the songs’ emotion and narrative. \nThe material is as joyful and fun as it is intense\, but the common factor is the duo’s warmth and confidence in each other; their natural ease and connection is clearly evident on the recorded music\, and a genuine pleasure to witness on stage. \n‘Dreamy reveries\, softly warm vocals\, stirring guitar arrangements – Sanders & Savage wield an elusive sort of magic’ MOJO \n‘An exquisite soundscape\, which is the result of passion\, precision and unbridled intimacy’ ★★★★★ R2 Magazine \n‘A stream of brilliant music – they should be rated among the elite when it comes to UK folk’ Rob Ramsey\, Maverick \n‘A confident and impressive sophomore album that not only fully justifies past predictions regarding Sanders trajectory in the current folk field but also marks the arrival of a significant new duo force.’ Folk Radio UK \nSupport will be from Duotone. Duotone is the alias for Cellist / Composer Barney Morse-Brown.  An acclaimed musician known for his masterful use of live looping and effects\, Cellist for award winning artists and bands such as Birdy\, Maya Youssef\, Imagined Village & Eliza Carthy and wearer of fine hats and facial hair. \nIn anticipation that social distancing measure could still be in place tickets are £15 and there will only be about 40 available. More tickets will be made available if circumstances allow. \nTickets available on-line at https://www.wegottickets.com/event/509862 or by contacting Duncan at biggingertommusic@gmail.com \nDoors and bar at 7pm\, music at 7:40pm.

SUMMARY:Big Ginger Tom Music presents Katherine Priddy with support from The People Versus SOLD OUT!
DESCRIPTION:We are thrilled to host Katherine Priddy at Harwell Village Hall a year after she sold out one of our Lean To Sessions at our home in Abingdon last year. \nBirmingham-based folk artist Katherine Priddy who emerged onto the scene with her long-awaited debut EP ‘Wolf’\, has been turning heads and steadily gaining attention. ‘Wolf’ has been championed by the BBC 2 Folk Show\, BBC 6 Music’s Gideon Coe and Tom Robinson and BBC Wales\, as well as receiving exceptional reviews. \nHaving previously supported the likes of The Chieftains\, Martin Carthy\, Vashti Bunyan\, John Smith and Scott Matthews\, Katherine solidified her place on bigger stages with a tour of Ireland with Richard Thompson in August 2019. As well as this\, she has played well-earned spots at festivals\, including Cambridge Folk Festival\, Towersey Folk Festival\, Shambala and Underneath the Stars and she walked away from her first performance at Cambridge Folk with the Christian Raphael Award. \nIn December 2019\, Priddy released a limited edition vinyl single ‘Letters From A Travelling Man’ on Static Caravan label\, an upbeat song about the perils of living an unsettled lifestyle on the road\, contrasted with a much mellower B-side ‘Come and Go’\, a duet with George Boomsma.  During the lockdown she collaborated with Lukas Drinkwater\, Jon Wilks and Jon Nice to release two Nick Drake covers which were both very well received. \nPriddy’s original works are delivered with an emotional maturity\, depth and a vulnerable tenderness that still carries a darker edge\, citing Nick Drake\, John Martyn\, Tunng and Imagined Village amongst her many influences. Her lyrics are particularly noteworthy – a tribute to her life-long love affair with literature and poetry and the stories she weaves are transporting. \nSupport will be from The People Versus lead by Harwell’s own Jack Wilkinson. \nTickets are SOLD OUT – to go on the waiting list for any cancellations e-mail biggingertommusic@gmail.com\,  or contact Duncan on 07999 052720. \nDoors at 7pm\, music at 7:40pm.

SUMMARY:Big Ginger Tom Music presents Kitty Macfarlane with support from Craig Joiner - 3 TICKETS NOW AVAILABLE!
DESCRIPTION:Kitty Macfarlane is a songwriter and guitarist from Somerset\, whose music is rich with visual imagery and written with an eco-eye. From the starling murmurations on the Somerset Levels to the lowly eel’s epic transatlantic migration\, and the small part we ourselves play in a much bigger picture\, her songs are bound by the underlying theme of mankind’s relationship with the wild. Kitty Macfarlane’s highly anticipated debut album Namer Of Clouds\, released September 2018 and produced by Sam Kelly and Jacob J Stoney\, gathers inspiration from the sky to the seabed. Carried by a voice ‘as clear as a mountain stream’ (FRUK)\, her lyrics touch on intervention and rewilding\, climate change and migration\, and woman’s historical relationship with textiles and the land. The album (and as of recently\, her live show) is augmented by all kinds of ‘found sound’ recorded in locations from Somerset to Sardinia – birdsong\, waterfalls\, the click of knitting needles – and bookended by sounds of the wild. \n\nKitty has recently been nominated for the Horizon Award in the 2019 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards. Her debut album Namer Of Clouds was one of The Guardian’s Best Folk Albums of 2018 with airplay across BBC Radio 2\, 3\, 4 and 6 Music\, meriting FATEA’s award for Female Artist of the Year and being nominated for Album Of The Year in the fRoots Critics Poll. As a bird enthusiast\, last year Kitty was invited to guest-present several episodes of Radio 4’s Tweet of the Day and also performed a live session on BBC Radio 2 in January this year. Since releasing her debut EP Tide & Time back in 2016\, and subsequently touring as support for Kathryn Roberts & Sean Lakeman\, Blair Dunlop and Elephant Sessions\, Kitty has received project funding from the English Folk Dance and Song Society\, and more recently the Lynsey de Paul Prize for female songwriters. \nAmong other things\, Kitty sings on Ben Walker’s solo album Echo (July 2019)\, Topic Records’ 80th anniversary compilation Vision & Revision (May 2019)\, Ashley Hutchings album Paradise & Thorns (November 2018)\, Ciaran Algar’s album The Final Waltz (2016)\, and Sam Kelly’s album The Lost Boys (2015). Kitty also guest sings on Ian Stephenson’s new live project Modulate (2019). \nDespite having been a professional musician for over 25 years and having written songs that have been recorded by the likes of Heart\, Bonnie Tyler\, Eddie Money and Steps\, and had his songs used in major Hollywood movies such as ‘A Nightmare on Elm Street’\, ‘102 Dalmatians’ and ‘Jack Reacher’\, this is the first ever Craig Joiner solo album. \nIn recent years Craig has been a stalwart of the Folk Club scene where he has gained an impressive following and where he honed the songs for the long awaited solo debut album ‘Art of Landing’.

SUMMARY:Big Ginger Tom Music presents Lady Maisery with support from Tom Griffin
DESCRIPTION:In an English folk scene currently bursting with bold and innovative folk music\, vocal trio Lady Maisery shine brightly. With their unique approach to harmony singing\, intelligent and thoughtful arrangements of both traditional repertoire and original compositions\, Hazel Askew\, Hannah James and Rowan Rheingans harness and celebrate their united voice. Whether unearthing a feminist twist hidden in a traditional tale\, delivering a poignant anti-war ballad\, or showcasing their immense multi-instrumental talents in original compositions that draw on a myriad of musical influences\, Lady Maisery are skilful explorers of the power\, beauty and vitality of song. Over the last five years\, the trio have toured widely\, performing sell-out shows across the UK and Europe. \nUnderpinning every performance are Lady Maisery’s distinctive harmonies: sometimes lush and rich\, sometimes dark and invigorating\, they intertwine with assured precision. The trio are also one of the foremost English proponents of mouth music\, or “diddling” – once common in England\, and still found across parts of southern and northern Europe\, this form of singing without words is a perfect showcase for their sheer musicality. Each also an accomplished instrumentalist\, many songs are expertly accompanied by a rich tapestry of Rowan’s fiddle\, banjo and bansitar\, Hazel’s harp and concertina and Hannah’s accordion and foot percussion \nSince the release of their debut album in 2011\, ‘Weave and Spin’ (named Album of the Week by the Independent newspaper)\, Lady Maisery have attracted substantial attention\, including being nominated for the Horizon Award at the 2012 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards and regularly appearing live on national radio. Their second album ‘Mayday’ (2013)\, a darker and more politically coloured record\, cemented their growing reputation as a truly unique band on the English folk scene\, with five star reviews from the likes of The Financial Times newspaper\, music critics called it an album full of “ideas\, purpose and urgency…powerful\, enthralling work” (Songlines). Their much anticipated third album Cycle was released in October 2016 with a sell-out 23 date tour and more rave reviews from the national press. The Guardian called it “some of the most some of the most exquisite\, thrilling vocal harmony work in the English folk scene”. \nThe will be supported by Tom Griffin an Oxford-based singer songwriter of his own self-styled “Urban Folk-Blues”. \nTickets are £15 in advance from Bob’s Butchers\, High Street\, Harwell from about a month before the event and at https://www.wegottickets.com/event/452476 or £17 on the door. Concessions for those 16 and under with an adult. \nDoors and bar at 7pm\, music at 7:40pm.

SUMMARY:Big Ginger Tom presents Duotone with support from Waterfahl
DESCRIPTION:Duotone (the alias of multi-instrumentalist\, songwriter and live looper Barney Morse-Brown) released his spellbinding new album A Life Reappearing on 4th May 2018. Like an alchemist Duotone weaves a plethora of instruments of an epic orchestral power – including his pioneering and unconventional cello playing – with a masterful use of a looper for his gentle vocals\, which wraps each song in a blanket of intimacy. \nDuotone’s music is inspired by life\, death and art. Whilst his first three albums\, Work Harder & One Day You’ll Find Her (2009\, GBM)\, the critically-acclaimed Ropes (2011\, ECC records) and Let’s Get Low (2015\, GMB)\, saw Duotone navigating his way through personal loss\, forthcoming fourth album A Life Reappearing is inspired by a book of paintings by Victoria Crowe. The book charts the remarkable life of Scottish shepherd Jenny Armstrong and Duotone’s visceral response to Crowe’s art gave him the spark to create; the unexpected parallels between his and Jenny’s lives\, and his reflections upon them\, a wealth of material. The outcome is eight exquisitely-crafted new songs which muse upon the cycle of life and our journey from the dark to the light. \nBarney learnt the cello at age six\, he went on to study at Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama and to win a scholarship in baroque cello at the Royal College of Music. He has been mesmerising audiences around the UK and further afield since releasing his first album in 2009 including standout performances at Union Chapel\, Birmingham Town Hall and End of the Road Festival. \nIn addition to his solo work as Duotone\, Barney has performed and recorded with high-profile musicians including Syrian Qanun player Maya Youssef\, folk illuminati Jackie Oates\, The Imagined Village\, Eliza Carthy\, Chris Wood and multi-platinum award-winning artist Birdy\, with whom he toured all over the world. \nA Life Reappearing was written and recorded by Duotone at home\, Borth-Y-Gest\, North Wales and at Starling Audio\, Oxford. Additional recording and mixing by Richard Neuberg at Strawhouse. Duotone performs vocals\, cello\, guitar (acoustic\, classical and electric)\, percussion and bass; alongside Jane Griffiths on viola\, violin and piano (on A Life Disappearing\, Hear You Whisper\, The Faintest and The Room respectively) and Adam Falkner on drums (The Faintest). Pete Thomas also guests on bass on Marta and award-winner folk artist Kris Drever sang guest vocals on The Faintest. \nSupport is from Abingdon based duo Waterfahl who bring us their own brand of Nordicana. Hanne Fahl on vocals and harmonica and Finn Fahl on guitar. Waterfahl have just released their debut album Sharp Flats. https://www.facebook.com/waterfahl/ \nTickets are £12 in advance from Bob’s Butchers\, High Street\, Harwell from about a month before the event and at https://www.wegottickets.com/event/450896\, and £14 on the door.\nConcessions are available for those 16 and under with an adult. \nDoors and bar at 7pm\, music at 7:40pm.
