SUMMARY:Big Ginger Tom Music presents Ellie Gowers with special guest Malcom MacWatt
DESCRIPTION:Ellie Gowers has been making an impression wherever she lands. Her music embeds a fierce energy that echoes the 60’s folk revival scene and she is known to hold pride of place on stage with her strong and lucent vocals. Her songs are built from a childhood love of literature and traditional folk song\, but also discuss the more modern narratives of the present day. These influences fuse together to create a sound that has been deemed unique and incomparable. \nIn the last two years\, Ellie has released the EP From Here on Outand followed that with her latest single Against the Tide which earned her a TedX talk. Both of these were welcomed with a good reception from listeners. These songs have been toured widely\, both in headline shows and support slots for critically acclaimed artists\, up and down the UK. \nAfter the unpredictable circumstances that 2020 brought with it\, Ellie found herself making good use of her time\, beginning to work on projects she had only ever thought about. Collaborations were done with friends new and old\, songs were written\, a festival was played\, and she was also included in the line up of the Filkin’s Drift Ensemble\, covering Arthur McBride.\nEllie enters 2021 with a brand new EP named Parting Breath\, an ode to Robert Burns’ Auld Lang Syne\, which will be released in March. \n“A strong\, crystal clear voice… an act to watch”\nBristol 24/7 \n“The absolute control and delicacy of her performance was amazing to watch”\nVisit Coventry \n“One young woman made a big impression on us this year. Ellie Gowers’ exquisite voice and unique vocal style was absolutely mesmerising. She’s one to watch.”\nLove Shrewsbury on Shrewsbury Folk Festival \nOpening the evening will be Malcom MacWatt \nDoors and bar at 7pm\, music at 7:30pm. \nTickets start at £13 and there are concession tickets at £8 for those 16 and under with an adult.  They are available from Duncan at biggingertommusic@gmail.com or on-line at https://www.wegottickets.com/event/530563

SUMMARY:Big Ginger Tom Music presents The Askew Sisters with support Chris Brain

They are spending 2018 deep in rehearsal\, reconstructing and re-exploring their sound\, unearthing old songs\, as well as composing and creating new music. Outstanding musicianship and warm delivery combine to underpin the infectious draw of his unique songwriting prowess.\n\nChris’ visceral lyrical style pays homage to the American greats\, Elliott Smith\, Paul Simon & Sufjan Stevens. His songs reveal the presence of an enduring human spirit within the cosmic loneliness of the 21st Century emotional landscape.\n\nA broad back catalogue examines diverse themes from deteriorating anxious minds & damaging gender constructs to literary heroines and hospital beds. Powered by a strong social conscience\, his music serves as a vehicle for exploring constructive\, meaningful change.\n\n\nEarly Bird Tickets at £13 are available until the end of July or until they are all sold.\n\n\nDoors and bar at 7pm\, music at 7:40 pm.

SUMMARY:Big Ginger Tom Music presents The Portraits with support from Dom Prag
DESCRIPTION:We are thrilled to bring The Portraits back to Harwell\, this time as a headline act.  They do a lot for charitable causes and this gig is no exception as they will be donating any proceeds from ticket and merchandise sales to charities supporting those caught up in the troubles in Ukraine. \nAnglo-Irish Acoustic Pop duo The Portraits\, aka husband and wife songwriters Lorraine and Jeremy Millington from Galway and Bristol respectively\, reached no 2 on the main iTunes chart\, and no 24 on the Christmas Day UK Ocial Charts Company Download Chart in December 2020 with their version of ‘Together In Electric Dreams’ featuring a locked down choir and orchestra from Somerset\, UK. It was released in memory of all those lost during the pandemic of 2020 and was featured on ITV’s This Morning\, BBC Radio 2’s Steve Wright In The Afternoon and Channel 5’s Jeremy Vine\, and received the backing of Stephen Fry\, Midge Ure\, Matt Lucas and a host of well-known figures. \nJeremy and Lorraine Millington met in 1995 when working as secondary school teachers on the Isle of Wight. Their life together has taken them to years spent in Bristol\, London and most recently\, Wells in Somerset\, following eight years soaking up the culture and lifestyle of La Rochelle in France\, where they moved in 2002 and where they were welcomed into a local community of folk singers of French\, British and Irish origin\, centred around the town’s Corrigans pub. This had a significant influence on the Millingtons\, leading them to experiment with a far more stripped back\, straightforward songwriting model\, influenced by the French storytelling ‘chanson’ style. \nSince 2006\, when they launched their first new music under the moniker The Portraits\, they have released 8 studio albums and a handful of singles\, performed numerous times at Glastonbury Festival and have donated much of their proceeds from CD sales and concerts to a school in Burma/Myanmar that they have supported for nearly 15 years. \nSupport is from up and coming Dom Prag who recorded his latest album with the help of none other than Phil Beer (Show of Hands). \nTickets start at £13 (only a few of these left)\, standard tickets are £15 and there are concession tickets of £8 for those 16 and under with an adult.  They are available from Duncan at biggingertommusic@gmail.com or www.WeGotTickets.com (plus booking fee):\nhttps://www.wegottickets.com/event/515596 \nDoors and bar at 7pm\, music at 7:40pm.

SUMMARY:Big Ginger Tom Music presents Joe Hicks with support from Steady Habits
DESCRIPTION:Big Ginger Tom Music are very pleased to be able to bring Joe Hicks to Harwell Village Hall. He and his friend Adam Barnes sold out one of our Lean To Sessions in Abingdon in January 2020 and it will be great to have Joe with his full band in Harwell. \nRaised in the rural market town of Newbury; English Singer-Songwriter Joe Hicks blends pop\, blues and folk influences\, combining intricate guitar composition with classic pop song-craft. Having made a name for himself as a session guitarist\, Hicks released his first solo single at the start of 2017 following a soul searching writing trip to a secluded Cornish Airbnb garage with no internet or phone signal. Soon after he was made ‘BBC Introducing Artist of the Week’\, receiving extensive radio play across the U.K and also a CLASH ’Track of the Day’ feature. Since then the songwriter has built up a sizeable online following (+1 million Spotify Streams) helped on by extensive support from BBC Introducing and touring of the UK and Europe\, including appearances at the Big Feastival\, Are You Listening? SUMMARY:SOLD OUT - Big Ginger Tom Music presents Katherine Priddy with support from Katie Grace Harris
DESCRIPTION:We are thrilled to host Katherine Priddy at Harwell Village Hall for the second year in a row\, especially as we are one of only 7 venues on her ‘The Eternal Rocks Beneath’ UK album tour . \nBirmingham-based folk artist Katherine Priddy who emerged onto the scene with her long-awaited debut EP ‘Wolf’\, has been turning heads and steadily gaining attention. ‘Wolf’ has been championed by the BBC 2 Folk Show\, BBC 6 Music’s Gideon Coe and Tom Robinson and BBC Wales\, as well as receiving exceptional reviews. \nHaving previously supported the likes of The Chieftains\, Martin Carthy\, Vashti Bunyan\, John Smith and Scott Matthews\, Katherine solidified her place on bigger stages with a tour of Ireland with Richard Thompson in August 2019. As well as this\, she has played well-earned spots at festivals\, including Cambridge Folk Festival\, Towersey Folk Festival\, Shambala and Underneath the Stars and she walked away from her first performance at Cambridge Folk with the Christian Raphael Award. \nIn December 2019\, Priddy released a limited edition vinyl single ‘Letters From A Travelling Man’ on Static Caravan label\, an upbeat song about the perils of living an unsettled lifestyle on the road\, contrasted with a much mellower B-side ‘Come and Go’\, a duet with George Boomsma. During the lockdown she collaborated with Lukas Drinkwater\, Jon Wilks and Jon Nice to release two Nick Drake covers which were both very well received. \nPriddy’s original works are delivered with an emotional maturity\, depth and a vulnerable tenderness that still carries a darker edge\, citing Nick Drake\, John Martyn\, Tunng and Imagined Village amongst her many influences. Her lyrics are particularly noteworthy – a tribute to her life-long love affair with literature and poetry and the stories she weaves are transporting. \nSupport will be from Katie Grace Harris. \nTickets are £15 each from Duncan at biggingertommusic@gmail.com or WeGotTickets.com – http://www.wegottickets.com/event/519376

SUMMARY:Big Ginger Tom Music Present The People Versus with special guests The Lost Notes and support from Patrick Griffin
DESCRIPTION:Big Ginger Tom Music are pleased to bring you two local acts plus an up and coming Birmingham based band to Harwell Village Hall. \nThe People Versus have been quickly recognised as one of the most exciting talents coming out of the Folk Music scene\, bringing their harmonies\, driving rhythms and storytelling tradition to the forefront of their sound. Their combined voices and instrumental lines swoop\, circle and support the beguiling voice and personality of the lead singer Alice. Each song is taut with feeling and longing\, inspired by Greek myth and tales from Shakespeare. \n“The resulting sound is Dreamy… it just pulls you in.” – BBC introducing\n“much too sweet to be manning the barricades” – Nightshift Magazine \nSpecial guests\, The Lost Notes are a 5-piece band based in Worcestershire and Birmingham and will be performing at this gig as a trio.  The principal songwriters are Ben and Oli.  Oli likes folk and Ben digs jazz and he resulting music is part folk with a drag of soul roots\, a slug of gospel or just downright country with a thump of jazz around the edges. \nSupport is from the ever improving singer songwriter Patrick Griffin who gave such a great performance here in Harwell last September. \nTickets are £15 from Duncan at biggingertommusic@gmail.com or on-line* at www.WeGotTickets.com *plus on-line booking fee \nDoors and bar open at 7:00pm\, Music at 7:30pm

SUMMARY:Big Ginger Tom Music presents The Magpies with support from Craig Joiner
DESCRIPTION:We are very pleased to welcome The Magpies to Harwell Village Hall.\n\nIt has only been a short space of time since The Magpies burst onto the UK folk scene\, but they have already made a huge impression with their fresh brand of transatlantic neo-folk and have been ‘making waves wherever they play’ (Phil Beer\, Show of Hands).\nBased on a deeply felt musical friendship\, The Magpies work collaboratively\, arranging material led by powerful vocals and glittering instrumental ornamentation. They each draw on their wide-ranging influences to create a unique blend of transatlantic folk\, transporting audiences to distant lands and capturing imaginations with their enthralling live show.\n\nThree accomplished musicians in their own right\, The Magpies is a combination far greater than the sum of its parts. Celtic Connections Danny Kyle Award winning guitarist\, banjo-player and singer Bella Gaffney is known for her folk inspired songs which she performs along with her own original arrangements of traditional pieces. Said to be ‘one of the best banjo players in the country’ (Dan Walsh)\, clawhammer banjo player and singer Kate Griffin’s compositions fuse influences from the British Isles\, America and India. And acclaimed fiddle-player Holly Brandon is an ‘ingenious tunesmith’ (Living Tradition)\, with roots in traditional English music\, but with influences from Eastern Europe to Quebec\, she creates a distinctly borderless and progressive sound.\n\nIn their live performances The Magpies have been exceptionally well-received. Their first year as a band in 2018 saw them perform at festivals such as Cambridge Folk Festival and on main stages at Wickham Festival\, Towersey Festival and Deer Shed Festival. 2019 saw their first international shows\, with performances at Folk Alliance International in Montreal\, a successful tour in Ireland and performances at Costa del Folk in Portugal. And the summer saw many more festival performances including Glastonbury\, Larmer Tree\, Warwick and Shambala.\n\nTheir debut album – Tidings – was released in June 2020 to critical acclaim. A rich and varied showcase of their live sound\, the album draws on a range of influences and delivers a sound that can only be described as contemporary. A huge range of exquisite instrumentation on mandolin\, guitar\, fiddle\, cello\, bouzouki and banjo provide a thrilling canvas on which they paint their stories. The album is full of songs which explore uniquely female experiences in unpredictable and surprising ways. From the transformation and sorcery of the traditional ballad The Two Magicians\, to lost love\, murder and suicide in the original Run River Run\, The Magpies bring a fresh voice to the current milieu. As well as drawing on their experiences as women\, the material is also deeply rooted in the traditions of their native Yorkshire.\n\n‘One of those effervescent albums you’d be happy to recommend to people who might not consider themselves folk fans’ – The Sunday Times\n\n‘Folk with finesse’ – The Daily Mail\n\n‘Check that album out! Really good mix of songs and instrumentals – they’re great players!’ – Mark Radcliffe\, BBC Radio 2\n\nSupport is from Craig Joiner who did a sterling job when he was last at Harwell supporting Kitty Macfarlane.\n\n\nAdvance tickets from Duncan at £13 by e-mailing biggingertommusic@gmail.com – they will be £15 on the door or if bought on-line at https://www.wegottickets.com/event/509147\n\nDoors and bar 7pm\, music at 7:40pm.

Since emerging in 2016\, the duo recorded two studio albums\, Before the Sun (2016) and Awake (2018)\, produced by award winning producer David Travers-Smith in Toronto. Both albums have gathered praise for the craft and skill of their musical writing and arranging. \nThey have shared stages and opened shows for Americana and folk luminaries such as Sarah Jarosz\, Martin Simpson\, Seth Lakeman and Oh Susanna. Fleetingly\, they may evoke a memory of Gram & Emmylou\, Shirley & Davey\, or Gillian & David but their distilling of musical influences from both sides of the Atlantic produces a refined sound that is decidedly their own. \nTheir unique unplugged presentation creates a widescreen\, cinematic soundscape with open spaces and atmosphere\, giving their beautifully pure vocals room to share the songs’ emotion and narrative. \nThe material is as joyful and fun as it is intense\, but the common factor is the duo’s warmth and confidence in each other; their natural ease and connection is clearly evident on the recorded music\, and a genuine pleasure to witness on stage. \n‘Dreamy reveries\, softly warm vocals\, stirring guitar arrangements – Sanders & Savage wield an elusive sort of magic’ MOJO \n‘An exquisite soundscape\, which is the result of passion\, precision and unbridled intimacy’ ★★★★★ R2 Magazine \n‘A stream of brilliant music – they should be rated among the elite when it comes to UK folk’ Rob Ramsey\, Maverick \n‘A confident and impressive sophomore album that not only fully justifies past predictions regarding Sanders trajectory in the current folk field but also marks the arrival of a significant new duo force.’ Folk Radio UK \nSupport will be from Duotone. Duotone is the alias for Cellist / Composer Barney Morse-Brown.  An acclaimed musician known for his masterful use of live looping and effects\, Cellist for award winning artists and bands such as Birdy\, Maya Youssef\, Imagined Village & Eliza Carthy and wearer of fine hats and facial hair. \nIn anticipation that social distancing measure could still be in place tickets are £15 and there will only be about 40 available. More tickets will be made available if circumstances allow. \nTickets available on-line at https://www.wegottickets.com/event/509862 or by contacting Duncan at biggingertommusic@gmail.com \nDoors and bar at 7pm\, music at 7:40pm.

SUMMARY:Big Ginger Tom Music presents Katherine Priddy with support from The People Versus SOLD OUT!
DESCRIPTION:We are thrilled to host Katherine Priddy at Harwell Village Hall a year after she sold out one of our Lean To Sessions at our home in Abingdon last year. \nSupport will be from The People Versus lead by Harwell’s own Jack Wilkinson. \nTickets are SOLD OUT – to go on the waiting list for any cancellations e-mail biggingertommusic@gmail.com\,  or contact Duncan on 07999 052720. \nDoors at 7pm\, music at 7:40pm.

SUMMARY:Big Ginger Tom Music presents Kitty Macfarlane with support from Craig Joiner - 3 TICKETS NOW AVAILABLE!
DESCRIPTION:Kitty Macfarlane is a songwriter and guitarist from Somerset\, whose music is rich with visual imagery and written with an eco-eye. From the starling murmurations on the Somerset Levels to the lowly eel’s epic transatlantic migration\, and the small part we ourselves play in a much bigger picture\, her songs are bound by the underlying theme of mankind’s relationship with the wild. Kitty Macfarlane’s highly anticipated debut album Namer Of Clouds\, released September 2018 and produced by Sam Kelly and Jacob J Stoney\, gathers inspiration from the sky to the seabed. Carried by a voice ‘as clear as a mountain stream’ (FRUK)\, her lyrics touch on intervention and rewilding\, climate change and migration\, and woman’s historical relationship with textiles and the land. The album (and as of recently\, her live show) is augmented by all kinds of ‘found sound’ recorded in locations from Somerset to Sardinia – birdsong\, waterfalls\, the click of knitting needles – and bookended by sounds of the wild. \n\nKitty has recently been nominated for the Horizon Award in the 2019 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards. Her debut album Namer Of Clouds was one of The Guardian’s Best Folk Albums of 2018 with airplay across BBC Radio 2\, 3\, 4 and 6 Music\, meriting FATEA’s award for Female Artist of the Year and being nominated for Album Of The Year in the fRoots Critics Poll. As a bird enthusiast\, last year Kitty was invited to guest-present several episodes of Radio 4’s Tweet of the Day and also performed a live session on BBC Radio 2 in January this year. Since releasing her debut EP Tide & Time back in 2016\, and subsequently touring as support for Kathryn Roberts & Sean Lakeman\, Blair Dunlop and Elephant Sessions\, Kitty has received project funding from the English Folk Dance and Song Society\, and more recently the Lynsey de Paul Prize for female songwriters. \nAmong other things\, Kitty sings on Ben Walker’s solo album Echo (July 2019)\, Topic Records’ 80th anniversary compilation Vision & Revision (May 2019)\, Ashley Hutchings album Paradise & Thorns (November 2018)\, Ciaran Algar’s album The Final Waltz (2016)\, and Sam Kelly’s album The Lost Boys (2015). Kitty also guest sings on Ian Stephenson’s new live project Modulate (2019). \nDespite having been a professional musician for over 25 years and having written songs that have been recorded by the likes of Heart\, Bonnie Tyler\, Eddie Money and Steps\, and had his songs used in major Hollywood movies such as ‘A Nightmare on Elm Street’\, ‘102 Dalmatians’ and ‘Jack Reacher’\, this is the first ever Craig Joiner solo album. \nIn recent years Craig has been a stalwart of the Folk Club scene where he has gained an impressive following and where he honed the songs for the long awaited solo debut album ‘Art of Landing’.
