SUMMARY:Big Ginger Tom Music Presents Ashley Hutchings with special guest Blair Dunlop and support from Painted Sky
DESCRIPTION:A father-son celebration of Ashley’s 80th birthday with words and music from a life in folk music and beyond. \n“My friend Ashley is the Godfather of Folk Rock. He made us a genre we couldn’t refuse” Bob Dylan \nAshley Hutchings ‘The Guvnor’ formed Fairport Convention in 1967\, a group that went on to invent British folk-rock with the album Liege & Lief – an album that was voted the ‘Most Important Folk Album of All Time’ by BBC Radio 2 listeners in 2002\, and at the 2006 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards it won the award for ‘Most influential Folk Album of all time’. He subsequently formed Steeleye Span who also had enormous success and then the first of many Albion Bands. \nBy 1977 the Albions became virtually the house band at the National Theatre with Ashley as Music Director. The band provided music and acted in many plays including the much-loved Lark Rise. In recent years “The Guvnor” has concentrated on songwriting\, spoken word and groundbreaking shows and albums and has released one hundred albums. \nAshley’s son Blair Dunlop joins his father for this very special tour. A BBC Folk Award-winning singer-songwriter in his own right\, the pair will reflect on a very special musical relationship in chat\, music and song. \nSupport will be from Bristol based Painted Sky.

SUMMARY:Big Ginger Tom Music Presents The Sam Kelly Trio with support from Sarah Yeo
DESCRIPTION:Sam Kelly will perform in Harwell for the first time in his trio format. \nSam writes and arranges most of his material with his main musical collaborator\, Jamie Francis. After meeting at university in Brighton in 2010 and discovering a common interest in roots music\, Sam and Jamie began playing together in a folk band\, with Jamie (a guitar player first and foremost) deciding to learn to play the banjo because Sam was already the guitarist. They also performed at many open mics and venues as a duo\, performing original\, folk and blues songs. \nNaturally\, the lives of two young musicians who have absolutely no idea what they´re doing became choc-full of many colourful experiences (including Sam auditioning for ITV´s Britain´s Got Talent whilst in London for a gig)\, and ending up getting all the way to the final). They still perform together at folk clubs\, venues and festivals\, performing inventive interpretations of tunes and songs in between (occasionally) funny anecdotes and stories of their misadventures. \nThe third member of the trio is fellow Lost Boy Graham Coe on cello. \nSupport is from Devon based Sarah Yeo. \nDoors and bar at 7pm\, music at 7:40pm. \nTickets £15 at https://wegottickets.com/event/636546 or from Duncan at the details below.

SUMMARY:Big Ginger Tom Music Presents Man The Lifeboats with support from Corrie Shelley
DESCRIPTION:Man The Lifeboats began life in a shanty-punk folk moshpit in 2016. Skinny Lister and Holy Moly & the Crackers were the two bands that lit the fire and blew the roof of the Garage that night.\n\nFast forward 6 years and 100 gigs and counting and Man The Lifeboats are an established band ploughing their furrow on the festival circuit\, winning over audiences at Warwick\, Swanage\, Beardy Folk\, Folk in a Field\, Bearded Theory\, Deepdale\, Ragged Bear and more\, drawing comparisons to Bellowhead\, Waterboys\, Oysterband\, the Levellers\, and those folk-punk heroes the Pogues.\n\nThe second album Soul Of Albion hit no27 in the Official Folk Charts in 2022. Recorded at Rockfield Studios\, it sounds like Led Zeppelin arm-wrestling Shane McGowan in a Birmingham brewery\, like Jimbob and Fruitbat fronting Fairport Convention\, like The Albion Band turned up to 11 with their fiddles on fire. Tonic for these troubled times.\n\nPRESS QUOTES\n\n“9/10. A stomping musical cocktail of alchemic proportions” OUTLINE MAGAZINE\n“Sounds like The Men They Couldn’t Hang at their height meet The Clash  – it’s a belter” FOLKING.COM\n“Think The Pogues in overdrive with the breath of the Dropkick Murphys down their necks” TURN UP THE VOLUME\n“Combining swirling punk-folk with biting politics. My kinda band.” TURN UP THE VOLUME\n\nSupport is from Corrie Shelley who we are pleased to welcome back to Harwell.\n\nEarly bird tickets at £15 (only 30 available!)\nStandard at £18\nConcession for 16 & Under with an adult £9\nOn The Door £20\n\nTickets available on-line at  – https://www.wegottickets.com/event/600601 or by contacting Duncan at biggingertommusic@gmail.com\n\nDoors and bar at 7pm\, music at 7:40pm.

SUMMARY:SOLD OUT - Big Ginger Tom Music Presents Ninebarrow with support from Wednesday's Wolves
DESCRIPTION:Ninebarrow (Jon Whitley and Jay LaBouchardiere) are a multi-award-winning folk duo\, who are impressing audiences across the country with their innovative and captivating take on the folk tradition. Described by Mark Radcliffe as sounding ‘like two halves of one voice’ and by Mercury Music Prize nominee Kate Rusby as ‘absolutely amazing’\, Jon and Jay combine breath taking vocal harmonies and melodies\, delivering original songs that are inspired and rooted in the landscape and history of the British Isles. As well as crafting unique and engaging original material\, Ninebarrow also take a wide-range of traditional folk songs and rework them in their own\, distinctive way.\nJon and Jay relinquished their respective full-time jobs as a teacher and GP back in 2016 and took a leap of faith into the music business – a gamble that almost immediately paid off. In 2017\, they were nominated for a BBC Radio 2 Folk Award: one of the highest accolades in the world of folk music and clear recognition for their outstanding harmonies\, high production values\, poetic lyricism and magical instrumentation.\nNamed after Nine Barrow Down in Dorset’s Purbeck hills\, the duo have produced four critically acclaimed albums with their 2021 record\, ‘A Pocket Full of Acorns’\, released to a raft of four and five star reviews in the folk and mainstream media. This arboreal-titled album brought with it a very special initiative which saw the pair planting 1\,000 native English trees (half of them oaks) and 200 shrubs to form The Ninebarrow Woodland on three acres of land near Gillingham in north Dorset – today the young woodland is burgeoning\, alive with myriad avian visitors and a flower glade.\nNever short of ideas\, the duo embraced the COVID lockdown period with a run of technically astute streamed gigs in indoor and outdoor settings (they continue today) which\, at their peak\, saw more than 2\,000 people tuning in as well as masterminding a special collaboration with two choirs (Hart Voices and Chantry Singers) to produce the charity single The Hour of the Blackbird which raised funds for mental health charity MIND. Keen walkers\, they have also penned two books of Dorset walks (with a third on the way) and for the past few years have run incredibly popular ‘musical walking holidays’ on Dorset’s magical Isle of Purbeck.\nAs they celebrate their first decade and prepare to release their fifth studio album\, it is clear that the name of Ninebarrow has become synonymous with one word – quality. The highly atmospheric ‘The Colour of Night’ (release date: 1st September 2023) is their first release in two-and-a-half years – and is a record that takes their remarkable success story to yet another level.\nSays Jon: “This collection is released in the tenth year since we picked up a ukulele and decided to have a go at singing some songs together. We feel like we’ve come a long way since then – we’re packing a few more instruments in the car for a start! The world has certainly felt a bit topsy-turvy since our last album but we are lucky to have received wonderful support that kept our spirits high – some of the songs here reflect that sentiment.”\nEngaging\, charismatic and humorous – Ninebarrow are winning new fans wherever they go. See them live\, and you’ll quickly understand why. \nSupport from Wednesday’s Wolves \nDoors and bar 7pm\, music at 7:40pm

SUMMARY:Big Ginger Tom Music presents Ellie Gowers with special guest Malcom MacWatt
DESCRIPTION:Ellie Gowers has been making an impression wherever she lands. Her music embeds a fierce energy that echoes the 60’s folk revival scene and she is known to hold pride of place on stage with her strong and lucent vocals. Her songs are built from a childhood love of literature and traditional folk song\, but also discuss the more modern narratives of the present day. These influences fuse together to create a sound that has been deemed unique and incomparable. \nIn the last two years\, Ellie has released the EP From Here on Outand followed that with her latest single Against the Tide which earned her a TedX talk. Both of these were welcomed with a good reception from listeners. These songs have been toured widely\, both in headline shows and support slots for critically acclaimed artists\, up and down the UK. \nAfter the unpredictable circumstances that 2020 brought with it\, Ellie found herself making good use of her time\, beginning to work on projects she had only ever thought about. Collaborations were done with friends new and old\, songs were written\, a festival was played\, and she was also included in the line up of the Filkin’s Drift Ensemble\, covering Arthur McBride.\nEllie enters 2021 with a brand new EP named Parting Breath\, an ode to Robert Burns’ Auld Lang Syne\, which will be released in March. \n“A strong\, crystal clear voice… an act to watch”\nBristol 24/7 \n“The absolute control and delicacy of her performance was amazing to watch”\nVisit Coventry \n“One young woman made a big impression on us this year. Ellie Gowers’ exquisite voice and unique vocal style was absolutely mesmerising. SUMMARY:Big Ginger Tom Music presents The Portraits with support from Dom Prag
DESCRIPTION:We are thrilled to bring The Portraits back to Harwell\, this time as a headline act.  They do a lot for charitable causes and this gig is no exception as they will be donating any proceeds from ticket and merchandise sales to charities supporting those caught up in the troubles in Ukraine. \nAnglo-Irish Acoustic Pop duo The Portraits\, aka husband and wife songwriters Lorraine and Jeremy Millington from Galway and Bristol respectively\, reached no 2 on the main iTunes chart\, and no 24 on the Christmas Day UK Ocial Charts Company Download Chart in December 2020 with their version of ‘Together In Electric Dreams’ featuring a locked down choir and orchestra from Somerset\, UK. It was released in memory of all those lost during the pandemic of 2020 and was featured on ITV’s This Morning\, BBC Radio 2’s Steve Wright In The Afternoon and Channel 5’s Jeremy Vine\, and received the backing of Stephen Fry\, Midge Ure\, Matt Lucas and a host of well-known figures. \nJeremy and Lorraine Millington met in 1995 when working as secondary school teachers on the Isle of Wight. Their life together has taken them to years spent in Bristol\, London and most recently\, Wells in Somerset\, following eight years soaking up the culture and lifestyle of La Rochelle in France\, where they moved in 2002 and where they were welcomed into a local community of folk singers of French\, British and Irish origin\, centred around the town’s Corrigans pub. This had a significant influence on the Millingtons\, leading them to experiment with a far more stripped back\, straightforward songwriting model\, influenced by the French storytelling ‘chanson’ style. \nSince 2006\, when they launched their first new music under the moniker The Portraits\, they have released 8 studio albums and a handful of singles\, performed numerous times at Glastonbury Festival and have donated much of their proceeds from CD sales and concerts to a school in Burma/Myanmar that they have supported for nearly 15 years. \nSupport is from up and coming Dom Prag who recorded his latest album with the help of none other than Phil Beer (Show of Hands). \nTickets start at £13 (only a few of these left)\, standard tickets are £15 and there are concession tickets of £8 for those 16 and under with an adult.  They are available from Duncan at biggingertommusic@gmail.com or www.WeGotTickets.com (plus booking fee):\nhttps://www.wegottickets.com/event/515596 \nDoors and bar at 7pm\, music at 7:40pm.

SUMMARY:Big Ginger Tom Music presents Joe Hicks with support from Steady Habits
DESCRIPTION:Big Ginger Tom Music are very pleased to be able to bring Joe Hicks to Harwell Village Hall. He and his friend Adam Barnes sold out one of our Lean To Sessions in Abingdon in January 2020 and it will be great to have Joe with his full band in Harwell. \nRaised in the rural market town of Newbury; English Singer-Songwriter Joe Hicks blends pop\, blues and folk influences\, combining intricate guitar composition with classic pop song-craft. Having made a name for himself as a session guitarist\, Hicks released his first solo single at the start of 2017 following a soul searching writing trip to a secluded Cornish Airbnb garage with no internet or phone signal. Soon after he was made ‘BBC Introducing Artist of the Week’\, receiving extensive radio play across the U.K and also a CLASH ’Track of the Day’ feature. Since then the songwriter has built up a sizeable online following (+1 million Spotify Streams) helped on by extensive support from BBC Introducing and touring of the UK and Europe\, including appearances at the Big Feastival\, Are You Listening? Festival\, over 30 Sofar Sounds shows and a slot supporting BRITS critics choice winner Sam Fender. \nJoe’s self-titled album (06.03.20) was recorded at Studio 91 in his home town of Newbury with producer Sam Winfield (Amber Run\, Fickle Friends). \n“This guy is absolutely smashing it\, we can’t wait to see what’s next for him!” – Linda Serck\, BBC Introducing Berkshire \nSupport will be from Steady Habits with front man Sean Duggan (The People Versus and Loud Mountains). \nTickets are £15 \nDoors and Bar at 7pm\, music at 7:40pm.

SUMMARY:SOLD OUT - Big Ginger Tom Music presents Katherine Priddy with support from Katie Grace Harris
DESCRIPTION:We are thrilled to host Katherine Priddy at Harwell Village Hall for the second year in a row\, especially as we are one of only 7 venues on her ‘The Eternal Rocks Beneath’ UK album tour . \nBirmingham-based folk artist Katherine Priddy who emerged onto the scene with her long-awaited debut EP ‘Wolf’\, has been turning heads and steadily gaining attention. ‘Wolf’ has been championed by the BBC 2 Folk Show\, BBC 6 Music’s Gideon Coe and Tom Robinson and BBC Wales\, as well as receiving exceptional reviews. \nHaving previously supported the likes of The Chieftains\, Martin Carthy\, Vashti Bunyan\, John Smith and Scott Matthews\, Katherine solidified her place on bigger stages with a tour of Ireland with Richard Thompson in August 2019. As well as this\, she has played well-earned spots at festivals\, including Cambridge Folk Festival\, Towersey Folk Festival\, Shambala and Underneath the Stars and she walked away from her first performance at Cambridge Folk with the Christian Raphael Award. \nIn December 2019\, Priddy released a limited edition vinyl single ‘Letters From A Travelling Man’ on Static Caravan label\, an upbeat song about the perils of living an unsettled lifestyle on the road\, contrasted with a much mellower B-side ‘Come and Go’\, a duet with George Boomsma. During the lockdown she collaborated with Lukas Drinkwater\, Jon Wilks and Jon Nice to release two Nick Drake covers which were both very well received. \nPriddy’s original works are delivered with an emotional maturity\, depth and a vulnerable tenderness that still carries a darker edge\, citing Nick Drake\, John Martyn\, Tunng and Imagined Village amongst her many influences. Her lyrics are particularly noteworthy – a tribute to her life-long love affair with literature and poetry and the stories she weaves are transporting. \nSupport will be from Katie Grace Harris. \nTickets are £15 each from Duncan at biggingertommusic@gmail.com or WeGotTickets.com – http://www.wegottickets.com/event/519376

SUMMARY:Big Ginger Tom Music Present The People Versus with special guests The Lost Notes and support from Patrick Griffin
DESCRIPTION:Big Ginger Tom Music are pleased to bring you two local acts plus an up and coming Birmingham based band to Harwell Village Hall. \nThe People Versus have been quickly recognised as one of the most exciting talents coming out of the Folk Music scene\, bringing their harmonies\, driving rhythms and storytelling tradition to the forefront of their sound. Their combined voices and instrumental lines swoop\, circle and support the beguiling voice and personality of the lead singer Alice. Each song is taut with feeling and longing\, inspired by Greek myth and tales from Shakespeare. \n“The resulting sound is Dreamy… it just pulls you in.” – BBC introducing\n“much too sweet to be manning the barricades” – Nightshift Magazine \nSpecial guests\, The Lost Notes are a 5-piece band based in Worcestershire and Birmingham and will be performing at this gig as a trio.  The principal songwriters are Ben and Oli.  Oli likes folk and Ben digs jazz and he resulting music is part folk with a drag of soul roots\, a slug of gospel or just downright country with a thump of jazz around the edges. \nSupport is from the ever improving singer songwriter Patrick Griffin who gave such a great performance here in Harwell last September. \nTickets are £15 from Duncan at biggingertommusic@gmail.com or on-line* at www.WeGotTickets.com *plus on-line booking fee \nDoors and bar open at 7:00pm\, Music at 7:30pm

SUMMARY:Big Ginger Tom Music presents The Magpies with support from Craig Joiner
DESCRIPTION:We are very pleased to welcome The Magpies to Harwell Village Hall.\n\nIt has only been a short space of time since The Magpies burst onto the UK folk scene\, but they have already made a huge impression with their fresh brand of transatlantic neo-folk and have been ‘making waves wherever they play’ (Phil Beer\, Show of Hands).\nBased on a deeply felt musical friendship\, The Magpies work collaboratively\, arranging material led by powerful vocals and glittering instrumental ornamentation. They each draw on their wide-ranging influences to create a unique blend of transatlantic folk\, transporting audiences to distant lands and capturing imaginations with their enthralling live show.\n\nThree accomplished musicians in their own right\, The Magpies is a combination far greater than the sum of its parts. Celtic Connections Danny Kyle Award winning guitarist\, banjo-player and singer Bella Gaffney is known for her folk inspired songs which she performs along with her own original arrangements of traditional pieces. Said to be ‘one of the best banjo players in the country’ (Dan Walsh)\, clawhammer banjo player and singer Kate Griffin’s compositions fuse influences from the British Isles\, America and India. And acclaimed fiddle-player Holly Brandon is an ‘ingenious tunesmith’ (Living Tradition)\, with roots in traditional English music\, but with influences from Eastern Europe to Quebec\, she creates a distinctly borderless and progressive sound.\n\nIn their live performances The Magpies have been exceptionally well-received. Their first year as a band in 2018 saw them perform at festivals such as Cambridge Folk Festival and on main stages at Wickham Festival\, Towersey Festival and Deer Shed Festival. 2019 saw their first international shows\, with performances at Folk Alliance International in Montreal\, a successful tour in Ireland and performances at Costa del Folk in Portugal. And the summer saw many more festival performances including Glastonbury\, Larmer Tree\, Warwick and Shambala.\n\nTheir debut album – Tidings – was released in June 2020 to critical acclaim. A rich and varied showcase of their live sound\, the album draws on a range of influences and delivers a sound that can only be described as contemporary. A huge range of exquisite instrumentation on mandolin\, guitar\, fiddle\, cello\, bouzouki and banjo provide a thrilling canvas on which they paint their stories. The album is full of songs which explore uniquely female experiences in unpredictable and surprising ways. From the transformation and sorcery of the traditional ballad The Two Magicians\, to lost love\, murder and suicide in the original Run River Run\, The Magpies bring a fresh voice to the current milieu. As well as drawing on their experiences as women\, the material is also deeply rooted in the traditions of their native Yorkshire.\n\n‘One of those effervescent albums you’d be happy to recommend to people who might not consider themselves folk fans’ – The Sunday Times\n\n‘Folk with finesse’ – The Daily Mail\n\n‘Check that album out! Really good mix of songs and instrumentals – they’re great players!’ – Mark Radcliffe\, BBC Radio 2\n\nSupport is from Craig Joiner who did a sterling job when he was last at Harwell supporting Kitty Macfarlane.\n\n\nAdvance tickets from Duncan at £13 by e-mailing biggingertommusic@gmail.com – they will be £15 on the door or if bought on-line at https://www.wegottickets.com/event/509147\n\nDoors and bar 7pm\, music at 7:40pm.
